TOFEL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is the most popular English-language test for student who wants to study abroad as well as help for employment in the visa application process.
It is accepted in over 11,000 universities and institutions around the world including, the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, UK, Europe, and Asia.
The third mode is TOEFL paper-delivered test. It is offered twice a month and candidates can apply up to two days before test day.
The TOFEL exam fee used to vary between USD $180 - $325, depending on where you live. In the U.S. it is $225 and in Australia, the price is $300. However, it is now fixed in India at US$190 for all three formats of the exam. This fee covers your registration fee, your score report, and 4 score reports sent to institutions you select. The additional fees will be charged in case of late registration, rescheduling, and canceling a test. Students can register for TOFEL on the ETS website.
Students can take the test at various test centers located across major cities or at their homes with the TOEFL iBT Home Edition test. TOFEL iBT is an internet-based test that can be taken at ETS authorized testing centers across major cities. After the COVID pandemic, the TOFEL iBT Home Edition is introduced so the students can take exams safely at their homes.

Listening : This section requires a candidate to listen to classroom discussions, lectures, conversations, and then answer questions related to the topic.
Reading : This section includes reading three or four passages and answering questions.
Writing : Aspirants will have read, listen, and then write in response to a question.
Speaking : The test takers have to express an opinion on a familiar topic based on reading and listening tasks.
The TOFEL exam occurred more than 60 times a year at test centers around the world or at home for iBT. The exam duration is three hours with 10 minutes breaks. The TOEFL exam has four parts: reading, listening, speaking, and writing.
It has 3 to 4 reading passages that come from textbooks taught at the university level. Each passage contains 10 questions so the total number of questions is around 40. 54-72 minutes are allowed for the Reading section of the test.
The listening section is 41 to 57 minutes long for 40 questions. It is divided into 2 parts: long conversation and short conversation. The long conversation lecture has 3-4 lectures (500-800 words) with 3-5 minutes long. Six questions come from each lecture and the total number of questions is 30.
A short conversation lecture has 2-3 short lectures about 3 minutes long. Five questions in each lecture and the total number of questions are around 12.
Speaking assessment is the difficult section of the TOEFL and its grade are depending on highly intelligible and sustained conversation skills with only minor mistakes. It’s 17 minutes long for 4 questions. There are one independent task and 3 integrated tasks (read/listen/speak). Your recorded responses are then sent to ETS to be scored by artificial intelligence.
It has allotted 50 minutes for completing 2 assignments. 20 minutes are allotted for a short reading passage and 30 minutes for a long essay on the given topic. The writing will be scored on the basis of syntactic variety and appropriate word choice. The essay should be well-organized and well-developed using relevant explanations and detailed support.
The test results would take six to ten days following the exam. If the score is not good the test can be taken again every once per three-day difference. The TOFEL test can be taken for an unlimited number of times to improve the test score. The TOFEL test score is valid for 2 years.
Higher TOFEL scores secure a seat at university as well as create a chance for a scholarship if offered by the university. Every university has its own TOEFL Score cut-off and students are expected to achieve higher scores than the set grade.
