scale. The minimum IELTS score for PG courses is 6.5
and for U.G. courses 6.0, is expected to clear the
IELTS test. In the U.S., the IELTS score is 6.0- 6.5

IELTS Test Format
IELTS tests check proficiency skills in the English
language at all levels of reading, writing,
listening, and speaking. You can take the test on
paper or computer. Reading, writing, and listening
tests can be given on the same day. The speaking
test can be booked on the same day or seven days
before or after the 3 tests, depending on the
availability of slots. The total test timing is 3
hours.
IELTS test is divided into 4 sections:
Listening:
Listening tests assess the listening
ability of candidates to check that they understand
the main ideas or factual information, opinion, and
purpose of speaking and can create arguments to
express their points. In a test, you listen to four
recordings and then have to answer the questions
asked. The time duration is 30 minutes for 40
questions. 10 minutes extra you get to transfer your
answers from the question booklet to the answer
sheet. A variety of question formats including,
multiple-choice, matching, plan/map/diagram
labeling, form/note/table/flow-chart/summary
completion, and sentence completion are part of the
listening test. Each correct answer gets 1 mark. The
listening test score is converted to the IELTS
9-band scale.
Reading:
The reading test contains three long
descriptive and analytical texts with 40 questions
that have to be completed in 60 minutes. The long
passages are taken from books, journals, magazines,
and newspapers. Each correct answer carries one
mark. The content of the Reading test is different
for the Academic test and the General Training test.
The test format is the same ranging from filling
gaps in the passage, matching the heading,
completing sentences, short answers, and
multiple-choice questions.
Writing:
The writing test assesses your skills in
vocabulary, grammar, and organization of ideas. You
have to complete 2 tasks (150 words for task 1 and
250 words for task 2) for both the Academic test and
General Training test. The test format is
descriptive analysis, summary, explanation, essay,
argument, and letter writing. The test timing is 60
minutes; you can manage your time in between 2
questions.
Speaking:
Speaking test assesses your spoken English skills.
You have an in-person speaking interaction with an
examiner and your response is recorded. The test
content is the same for the Academic test and
general training test. Your speaking skill is judged
on the basis of how long you speak on a given topic
by putting valid points? How do you organize your
ideas and communicate your opinions and information?
This test is conducted in 3 parts and 11-15 minutes
are scheduled for each part.
